Over the weekend more than 4,500 people around the world took the opportunity to visit MBAC and take a little look around our lobby thanks to virtual tour technology offered by The site offers virtual tours of interesting locations via the web or via their free mobile app.

You can view the MBAC tours at

Using a wide angle lens and a special tripod mount, former MBAC Instructor Paul Lang ( submitted several VR tours of MBAC including the MBAC lobby, patio area, boat house and solar array. Once the photos are submitted and run through special software users can virtually tour the center. That is, they can actively look 360 degrees around the room, as well as up and down, and as if they were standing there in person. iPhone and iPad users who download the free Tourwrist app can actually hold their devices out in front of them, and rotate them around and up and down to have a virtual window to the tour.

“When I first looked at the tour in my iPhone I was shocked,” said Rachel Nelson after downloading the app. “It was amazing to see the room like I was there.”

The MBAC lobby tour was featured as a “Tour of the Day” on the site, which is what led to the high number of visitors from all corners of the world.

MBAC Stand Up Paddling (SUP) Instructor, Pamela Strom, won 1st place in the 12’6” category of the La Jolla Invitational, a paddling race that is part of the Southern California Ocean Racing Series.  The 5 mile race held at La Jolla Shores hosted over 200 participants consisting of SUPers, kayakers, and outrigger canoe paddlers.

Before becoming a stand up paddler, Pamela was a state champion in the outrigger canoe. She's a veteran paddler who has been competing in paddling races since 2006 and has an impressive resume of finishing in the top of her categories. She has also been featured in several paddling publications.

The race at La Jolla presented some real challenges, even an experienced paddler like Pamela, due to rough water produced by an offshore storm.   Part of the strategy of SUP racing is to read the water and take advantage of the swells.  Finding opportunities to ride sideswell, or using the waves to push you along the race course, is an important factor to do well in competition.  With swell, wind and chop coming from all directions, reading the water can be a real challenge, even for veteran racers.

“My paddling skills were really tested during the race,” Pamela lamented.  “Due to the rough conditions it was a really fun and technical race.”
